Abstract

Since the 1880s, electrical energies started circulating in European theaters, generated from fossil fuels in urban power plants. A mysterious force, which was still traded as romantic life force by some and for others had already come to stand in for progress, entered performance venues. Engineering knowledge, control techniques and supply chains changed fundamentally how theater was made and thought of. The mechanical image machine from Renaissance and Baroque times was transformed into a thermodynamic engine. Modern theater turned out to be electrified theater. - Retracing what happened backstage before the Avantgarde took to the front stage, this book proposes to write the genealogy of theaters modernity as a cultural history of theater technology. This book is a translation of the original German 1st edition Das Theater der Elektrizität. Technologie und Spektakel im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert by Ulf Otto, published by J.B.Metzler, part of Springer Nature in 2020. The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence (machine translation by the service DeepL.com). Abstract

This edited volume offers a wide-ranging picture of Argentine women filmmakers’ contribution to the film industry from the 1980s to the present by bringing together the work of highly acclaimed and emerging directors. Through thirteen critical essays by leading scholars in the field of Argentine cinema, the book acknowledges that contemporary women filmmakers have transformed the cinema of Argentina by questioning, challenging and debunking hegemonic patriarchal systems of representation. Dr Daniel Mourenza is Assistant Professor in Hispanic Cultural Studies at Radboud Universiteit. His research focuses on film theory, visual culture and Spanish and Latin American cinema. He is the author of Walter Benjamin and the Aesthetics of Film (2020). Mourenza has also co-edited a special issue of Parallax on ‘Barbarism’. .

Abstract

This book makes the case for Bertolt Brecht’s continued importance at a time when events of the 21st century cry out for a studied means of producing theatre for social change. Here is a unique step-by-step process for realizing Brecht’s ways of working onstage using the 2015 Texas Tech University production of Brecht’s Mother Courage and Her Children as a model for exploration. Particular Brecht concepts—the epic, Verfremdung, the Fabel, gestus, historicization, literarization, the “Not…but,” Arrangement, and the Separation of the Elements—are explained and applied to scenes and plays. Brecht’s complicated relationship with Konstantin Stanislavsky is also explored in relation to their separate views on acting. For theatrical practitioners and educators, this volume is a record of pedagogical engagement, an empirical study of Brecht’s work in performance at a higher institution of learning using graduate and undergraduate students. Bill Gelber is a Professor of Theatre in Acting, Directing, and Pedagogy at Texas Tech University, USA. He has been published in the Brecht Yearbook, Communications of the International Brecht Society, Southern Theatre, Texas Theatre Journal, and Early Modern Literary Studies and was recently inducted into the Texas Tech Teaching Academy. .
